Post-stroke motor aphasia, or loss of language functions, is a common limitation that can occur after a stroke. Recent research has shown that acupuncture can significantly improve language function, quality of life, and neurological impairment in stroke patients compared to sham acupuncture.
In a randomized clinical trial, stroke patients with motor aphasia were divided into two groups - one receiving six weeks of acupuncture treatment and the other receiving sham acupuncture.
The study found that the group receiving acupuncture showed significant improvements in language function, quality of life, and neurological impairment at the sixth week of treatment, which were maintained during the six-month follow-up period.
Patients with aphasia severity scores of 0 to 3 and aphasia duration of 15 to 90 days were eligible for the study. Such research highlights the potential benefits of acupuncture in helping alleviate post-stroke motor aphasia and improving overall recovery outcomes.
