A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that affects the urinary system, including the bladder and urethra.
While anyone can get a UTI, individuals with a vulva are more susceptible. Bacteria from the vaginal, genital, and anal areas can enter the urethra, travel to the bladder, and cause an infection. Common causes include sexual activity and STIs like chlamydia and gonorrhea.
To prevent UTIs, it is recommended to drink plenty of fluids, urinate when needed, urinate before and after sex, wipe from front to back after using the bathroom, wash the skin around the anus and genitals with warm water and gentle soap, and use barriers like condoms and dental dams during sex, especially during anal contact.
Treatment for UTIs involves antibiotics to eliminate the infection. The type, dosage, and duration of treatment depend on the cause of the infection and the individual's medical history. UTIs are curable with appropriate treatment.
